The suburb of Kensington was originally and variously named Lachlan Mills Estate, Stannumville, and Epsom. The name Kensington was settled upon in the 1880s and residential land was released around the same time. It was hoped that Kensington would become the equivalent to the area of the same name in London.
The racecourse at Kensington opened in 1893 on the site now occupied by the University of New South Wales. for which the land was taken back by government in 1950 to construct the university.
West Kensington is dominated by a hill occupied by the Sacred Heart Monastery which is the Australian headquarters of the Catholic Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Built in 1895, it was designed by Hennessy and Sheerin. It features a large stone building in the Gothic style with a tower and a Romanesque-Byzantine brick chapel built in 1939, designed by Mullane. The two buildings are joined by a brick cloister. The monastery can be seen from most parts of Kensington. Anti-Communist organiser Dr PJ (Paddy) Ryan (ordained as priest in 1929) resided in the monastery in the 1940’s and 50’s.
